Argentina is the fifth wine making producer world wide

The wine-making region in Argentina ranges between the 22° and 42° South latitude. It spreads at the foothills of the Andes mountain range along over 2,400 km; from the province of Salta to the province of Río Negro, with a variety of climates and soils that makes each region a unique land.

In general terms, the areas dedicated to vine cultivation are dry and arid with a low level of rain and humidity. Due to the low rain regime, irrigation is necessary. The main source of irrigation is the water comes from the Mountain Rivers that descend from the Andes.

Abundant sunny days and thermal amplitude favor a good maturity and concentration of aroma and color in the grain. Soils are deep, permeable and poor in organic matter, decisive qualities at the time of obtaining good wine.  Undoubtedly, the combination of these factors turns Mendoza into an oasis with the highest winemaking quality.

Mendoza is divided into 5 wine regions, which are subdivided into many sub-regions and climates.

  1. North: Las Heras and Lavalle. This area is the lowest in altitude at 700 meters above sea level (m.a.s.l) and it’s located in the Northeast of Mendoza City. The soils are shallow, somewhat salty and fairly permeable in the lower areas, making this area suitable for the production of fruity whites and young reds.

  2. East: San Martin, Junin, Rivadavia, Santa Rosa and La Paz. It has the highest production in the Province because the highest yield production vineyards are grown here, at 33 degrees South Latitude.

  3. Central and High Region of the Mendoza River: Godoy Cruz, Guaymallén, Luján de Cuyo and Maipú. This area, is also known as “Primera Zona”, is regarded as first fine wine producer in the country. Its geography is very unique due to the wide temperature range (average 59F degrees) and the altitude (800 to 1,100 m.a.s.l.). Malbec is the characteristic vine grape of this region. The wine made with Malbec grapes has such a remarkable personality that even though it’s grown in other places in the world, the quality level of our Malbec can’t be found anywhere else. That’s why Malbec has become synonym of Argentinean red wine.

  4. De Uco Valley: Tupungato, Tunuyán and San Carlos. This region is the highest in altitude, reaching 1,400m.a.s.l. in the North region of Tupungato. It’s situated at 34 degrees South latitude and there’s a wide temperature range between the minimum and the maximum, averaging 59F degrees. This helps red varieties to develop their tannins and good color; and whites to develop the right acidity. The soils in this region are alluvial, stony and well drained.

  5. South: San Rafael and General Alvear. The vineyards of this region are irrigated by two main rivers (Diamante and Atuel). The soils are sandy with scarce organic matter and low in nitrogen. The most characteristic variety of this region is Chenin Blanc, which produces a fragrant and delicate wine. High quality wines come from this area, situated at 35 degrees South latitude. San Rafael was the first one to establish the  “Appellation d’origine” in Argentina.

We have selected a variety of wineries (long-established, traditional, modern, and ecological) to give you a good knowledge of the wine of the region. All winery tours include wine tasting. Usually we visit between three and four wineries everyday with commented wine tasting, tour sites of historical or artistic interest. The duration of the tour is flexible.
