About Mendoza
Mendoza, also known as
the “Land of the sun and the good wine” is the capital city of the
homonymous province and the most important city of the West of
Argentina. It is situated at the foothills of the Andes Mountains and
about 610 miles West of Buenos Aires. It has a population of over one
million people.
Mendoza
and wine are synonyms. Approximately 80% of the wine made in Argentina
comes from Mendoza. The glaciers of the Andes Mountains supply the
water, which irrigates the fruit orchards, and vineyards where the
famous Argentine wines are made. The vineyards cover a series of oasis
that are close to the Mountain Rivers, which provide water for
irrigation that is essential due to the dry weather.
The climate of the region is mild, though the mountains provide a
certain degree of aridity. The temperature in summer ranges from 64F
to 95F degrees and days are hot and nights are cool. In winter, the
minimum temperature is about 35F degrees and the maximum registered
temperature is 60F degrees.
In the
city, there is a beautiful sight of streets bordered by trees and
parks linked by a web of irrigation ditches which is 300 miles long
that waters the whole area allowing city planning even in arid zones.
The downtown area very picturesque with all the outdoor cafés,
attractive plazas, fountains and tree-lined avenues attest to the
city's European heritage. Mendoza is a perfect example of a successful
combination of Spanish, Italian and indigenous cultures.
Mendoza
is the starting point to enjoy adventure travel and high mountain
sports like mountain climbing, trekking, ski and white water rafting.
When you vacation in Mendoza you'll also have the chance visit the
region's premiere wineries as you tour "La Ruta de Vino" and sample
vintage reds and whites, including Argentina's famous Malbec wines.
Tasting Mendoza offers various circuits to go on these excursions and
much more.
